A Brand That Speaks
When we set out to refresh Whisp's visual identity, we wanted to create something that felt warm, human, and approachable—qualities that reflect the intimate nature of voice interaction. This post takes you behind the scenes of our design evolution.
The Original Identity
Whisp launched with a minimal, tech-forward aesthetic common in the startup world. While functional, it didn't capture the warmth and personality that makes voice interaction special. As we grew, we realized our brand needed to evolve.
Design Principles
Our new identity is guided by three core principles:
- Warmth Over Cold: Voice is personal and human. Our design should feel warm and inviting, not clinical or technical.
- Motion and Life: Voice is dynamic. Our visual language incorporates motion and rhythm that echo the flow of speech.
- Clarity and Focus: Voice requires attention. Our interfaces are clean and distraction-free, putting content first.
The Color System
Amber became our primary accent color—warm, energetic, and distinctive. It evokes creativity and optimism while being highly visible for interactive elements. Our cream background (#FDF8E8) provides a softer alternative to harsh white, reducing eye strain during extended use.
The deep black (#0a0a0a) we use for dark mode isn't pure black—it has subtle warmth that makes it feel more natural and less stark on modern displays.
Typography Choices
EB Garamond brings elegance and readability to headings, with its classical serifs feeling warm and literary—appropriate for a tool that transforms voice into written word. For body text and UI elements, we chose clean sans-serif fonts that remain highly legible at all sizes.
The Visualizer
Our signature audio visualizer—the floating pill bar with amber waveform—has become iconic to the Whisp experience. Its design went through dozens of iterations to achieve the right balance of visibility and subtlety. The pill shape feels friendly and approachable, while the pulsing animation provides confidence that Whisp is listening.
Iconography
We developed a custom icon set with consistent stroke weights and rounded corners that echo the softness of our overall design language. Icons are designed to be instantly recognizable at small sizes while maintaining visual harmony at larger scales.
Looking Forward
Visual identity is never finished—it evolves with the product and the people who use it. We're continuously refining our design system based on user feedback and emerging design patterns, always staying true to our core principles of warmth, motion, and clarity.
